In our September update we talk more about the reasons we are selling our house to travel the world. We are two weeks out from a closing date and have the perfect apartment lined up. The kids are ready to go and the family will be moving while I’m in the Netherlands.
Her are five reasons we are selling our house.
It takes time to sell a house, and the only way to get out of a house is through a possibly long expensive process. If during our travels we find a place we want to spend 6 months to a year in it’s easier to close down an apartment than a house.
2. Lowered expenses
Living in an apartment will reduce our living expenses by about $500 per month. That is money that we can use to invest, to travel, or to give. Plus, if we plan to be here only half the year we don’t need a huge home while we’re here.
3. Adjust to smaller space
The places we want to stay in Europe and Asia are not 2400 sq. ft. suburban homes. They are a much different living situation so we want to get ourselves and the kids ready for this reality.
4. Have less stuff
We are minimalists. We prefer time spent and experiences to owning physical items. Living in a smaller space helps us keep down the amount of clutter we own.
5. More time
Owning a large home isn’t evil or bad, but we’d rather be spending our time with our family doing fun stuff than cleaning and doing lawn maintenance.
* Completely Debt Free
After selling the house we will be completely debt free! I’d really like to know what this feels like. If we don’t like it and want to get back into debt that will be easy, but I think we’re going to enjoy it. We will buy a house eventually, but we are going to shoot for the “100% down” plan.
